Abstract

Using ionizing radiation in medicine, industry and research is developing rapidly. The principles of radiation protection guarantee the health of workers, public and the environment. Therefore, the development of guides and training of workers is the most important requirements and programs of regulatory bodies. Despite the requirement of radiation center to comply with regulations, there have been occurrence of radiation accidents. Industrial radiography, as one of the most hazardous radiation activities, which uses high activity sources, has already been exposed to radiation accidents. In this study, 43 cases of recorded radiation accidents related to industrial radiography have been investigated in terms of the effective factor in the accident and secondary factors that have interfered in the progression of the accident have also been considered. The classification of accidents in terms of the main factor shows that non-compliance with work processes has the highest number of accidents. Inadequate regulatory control and deliberate misconduct at a considerable distance are next. Examination of the main causes of radiation accidents in industrial radiography shows that proper training of radiologists and application of instructions can be effective in controlling the occurrence of radiation accidents.
