In this article the source energy effect on the quality of counting profile obtained using gamma ray scanning technique has been investigated. A lab-scale tray type column (one-pass tray type with 51 cm diameter) along with a 1×1 inch NaI (Tl) has been applied to investigate the source energy effect. MCNPX Monte Carlo code has been used to simulate the column in normal and abnormal operating conditions.Cs-137 and Co-60 sources have been used to investigate the source energy effect. The simulation results of the column scanning have been validated by experimental measurement results. Based on the results, Cs-137 leads to a better statistics with respect to Co-60 and the foaming defect is better distinguished using Cs-137.
